Details

A SkyWaltz Balloon Safari not only offers you the  opportunity to see India and its spectacular forts, hidden palaces,  breathtaking terrain and traditional local villages from a very unique  perspective but also the chance to meet the friendly people that make this  country such a vibrant, energetic & diverse place . Your Balloon Safari will take you where no tour itinerary will and every flight is a totally new adventure.

Getting ready

A morning Balloon Safari starts early with our vehicles picking you up from the common meeting point in Talegaon (Hotel Orritel). Your exact pick-up time will be confirmed with you or your guide one day before your Safari. As you arrive at the launch site, our friendly team will be there to greet & welcome you. You will then have time to enjoy some Tea, Coffee, Juice and light refreshments whilst you witness the exhilarating site of the Balloons being inflated and prepared for flight.

Taking off!

After being expertly guided into your Balloon Basket by our helpful Crew, a thorough Safety Briefing will be conducted by your Pilot’s. Then with the rising of the sun and a few short blasts’ of the Burners, you will be gently released from your ties to earth to calmly float in the Indian Skies.

Gliding through the sky

Each flight is spectacularly different. Whilst we know from where you will take-off, we genuinely don’t know where you will land as you drift where the wind decides to take you. Your Pilot will vary the altitude during the flight, flying low to offer you an exclusive sneak-peak into daily Indian life and its hidden treasures and then climbing high to witness the amazing patchwork of colours and contours.

Touch down!

Your Balloon Safari will last for approximately 60 minutes but may be slightly shorter or longer depending on the weather conditions on the day. After you have landed , our vehicles will be ready and waiting to drop you back to your Hotel or to another convenient location - If you are travelling with a tour group, our drivers will take you to meet with the rest of your group (soon to be very jealous of your experience) and will wait with you until your guide arrives.

Things to Get

You can bring a camera, binoculars or camcorder as the balloon makes an excellent platform for photography. They must not be in metal cases and they are carried at your own risk. Most of our balloons have special pouches to stow cameras on landing. Some of our pilots in certain areas offer an in-flight photo service and if this is available they will explain this to you on the day.

We recommend clothes suitable for a walk in the country depending on the time of year and on the specific day you are flying. Generally warm, comfortable layers are a good idea, plus a cap or other hat for the warmth from the burners. Depending on conditions, sensible shoes or trainers are essential. Usually passengers are asked to help with the inflation and deflation of the balloon which most people really enjoy. This is much appreciated because it helps to make the process much quicker for everyone. Hence please wear clothes which you don’t mind getting a little dirty.

What you should know

How long is the hot air balloon flight?

A hot air balloon ride with us lasts for around an hour, depending on prevailing weather conditions and suitability of landing sites, but you should allow at least three hours for the entire experience.

Where do you fly from?

We have over 4 balloon launch sites between Lonavala& Pune. Depending on the wind conditions, the launch site will be decided by the pilot.

Do you have a pickup and drop Service?

We have a pickup and drop service from the common meeting point in TalegaonPickup (Hotel Orritel)which is included in the Ticket price. The pickup and drop from Lonavala / Mumbai / Pune will be charged separately on request.

When do you fly?

We schedule hot air balloon rides morning, seven days a week during the ballooning season which is October to May. This does vary in some areas and in late May some flights will take place during the day due to limited day light hours.

Why don’t you generally fly during the day?

During the day, the sun heats the ground which in turn heats the air above causing thermals or columns of rising air. These thermals cause updrafts and downdrafts which affect a pilot’s ability to safely control the altitude of a hot air balloon. Lower temperatures in late October mean these conditions are not as common which allows day flights to take place.

What time do I need to be at the launch site?

These are some approximate meeting times. You will be given the exact meeting time when you call the flight confirmation line.

How high will we go?

Sometimes up as high as 4,000 feet - although this depends on instructions from the Air traffic control of the Airports. It does vary from area to area and time of the year flown. Even at a few hundred feet the views are incredible and over 1,000 you can start to see for miles!

How far will we fly?

Hot air balloons can’t be steered in the normal sense so they travel on the wind with skilled pilot’s controlling the altitude by heating the air inside the balloon. How far you’ll fly depends on the wind speed. It also depends on how long it takes the pilot to find a suitable landing spot. You could fly a relatively short distance or as far as 12-15 kms.

Where will we land?

Hot air balloons can’t be steered so they travel on the wind and you never know where exactly you’re going to land. The pilot will start looking for a suitable landing site after around 45 minutes. The retrieval crew will track the balloon on the ground and aim to arrive shortly after landing.

What’s the landing like?

Flying in a balloon is a very serene experience while in the air, but it is an adventure activity in the great outdoors and sometimes on landing the basket can tip and/or drag along before coming to rest. This is how balloons have been landing for over 200 years and is perfectly normal. The balloon and basket are designed for your comfort and safety throughout the flight. During landing you will be in the safe, seated landing position within the basket as instructed by your pilot. The landing is an exciting part of the experience and in many cases people say it is their favourite part of the flight.

Will the balloon fly over my house?

We’d love to be able to promise this but, obviously, as hot air balloons cannot be steered, it’s a bit tricky. If you take off from a launch site in your home town or county and the wind is on your side, it is possible you’ll see your home. But, to avoid disappointment, please don’t expect it.

Can people come with me to watch?

Spectators are welcome but please let them know that there may not be toilets or other facilities at the launch site. We would not recommend that spectators try to follow the balloon by road for safety reasons. Passengers will be transported back to the common meeting site after the flight, around 3 hours after the initial meeting time.

Cake, Greeting banner ( Birthday, Anniversary etc) to express your love can be provided at an additional cost.

It is a fairly remote trek and is now regarded as the classic route from Gangotri to Kinnaur, which was first crossed by Marco Pallis in 1933. The trek can be done from either side. The beautiful route takes you through some of the most remote areas of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, like the Jalandhari valley that is covered with flowers post monsoon. The snow in the early season could impede your progress. Harsil is famous for Wilson's Cottage built in 1864. Gangotri is a short drive from Harsil, while Chitkul is the last village in the Baspa valley.

Itinerary Day 1: HARSIL (2400m) TO GANGAPANI (3400m) - 16km (7hrs)
  1. You have the option of either taking the road or walking to Gangapani through walnut, pine and birch forests. At Gangapani you can take a holy dip in a hot water spring called Rishi Kund, where there is a temple dedicated to sage Parashar.
Day 2: GANGAPANI TO KIARKOTI (3820m) - 18Km (7hrs)
  1. The trail continues along the river Jalandhari through dense forest, waterfalls and streams, which you need to cross. The lovely meadow at Kiarkoti makes for a beautiful campsite.
Day 3: KIARKOTI TO LAMKHAGA PASS BASE CAMP (4400m) - 8Km (4hrs)
  1. The trail divides a little beyond kiarkoti, the straight path goes to Chhotakhaga Pass, while the trail for Lamkhaga Pass crosses the river to the true right of the valley. The valley is fairly narrow, leading to the snout of the glacier.
Day 4: LAMKHAGA PASS BASE CAMP TO GUNDAR (4450m) VIA LAMKHAGA PASS (5284m)
  1. Today could be a tough day depending on the ice conditions. The trail is marked by chortens (religious stone mounds), and crosses snow slopes between two ribs and possible crevasses. The climb is fairly steep and you may require a rope. The views from the pass are truly rewarding. The rivers flowing on either side of the pass flow into the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. The path on the other side is also steep and you may require a rope. Gundar is about 5km from the pass and has grazing meadows.
Day 5: GUNDAR TO DUMTI (4050m) - 16KM (6hrs)
  1. From Gundar, follow the Baspa River on the true right bank. There are several side streams to cross on your way to Dumti. An early start is recommended in case the streams have turbulent water. The valley widens with many camping grounds at Nithal Thatang and Suthi Thatang.
Day 6: DUMTI TO RANI KA NDA (3700m)-14Km (5hrs)
  1. Today is a beautiful day passing through flower filled meadows with waterfalls. You again have several side streams to cross, but not as turbulent as day 5. The forest starts to appear as you get closer to Chitkul.

Day 7: RANI KANDA TO CHITKUL (3435m) - 9Km (3hrs)
  1. Chitkul is the last settlement of the Baspa Valley and is located on the right bank of the river. It has a PWD rest house. There is a road along the left bank from karcham. There are three temples dedicated to the local goddess mathi, the main one is believed to be around 500 years old. Sangla, 26km from Chitkul is worth a visit and is the most charming valley in the district of Kinnaur.
